Work Permits Overview
So you've decided to make Alderney your new home and you've been offered the job of a lifetime on this beautiful Island, what do you do next?
The Employment Permits (Alderney) Law, 1975 (the Law) requires everyone who works in Alderney (and who is aged 16 or over) to hold a valid Work Permit in order to work. Either you or your employer will apply for one. It's very quick, simple and easy for you or your employer to apply for a work permit.
A separate immigration Work Permit is also required for those who require immigration permission to enter Guernsey for employment purposes.
Work permits are issued through the States of Alderney Chief Executive's Office.

Work Permits Defined
A work permit is an official document giving a foreigner permission to take a job in a country.
Here on Alderney, work permits are intended to be used to protect employment opportunities.
Who applies for my work permit?
It is at the discretion of an Alderney employer as to whether they or you apply for an Employment Permit, so it is important to ask any prospective employer at time of application.
Self-employed individuals will need to apply themselves.
How much does a work permit cost?
The fee for a work permit is £40. It must be renewed on an annual basis. A renewal is £20.
Once a person has been in the same employment for 4 years, or resident on Alderney for 5 years they are eligible to apply for an Indefinite Work Permit which is valid for all employment the applicant chooses to undertake. The fee for an Indefinite Work Permit is £80. This does not need to be renewed.

Work Permit Exemptions
Not everyone has to apply for a work permit, as they may fall into an exemptions category. Some of the conditions below may apply to a work permit exemption:
- Employment in HSBC Bank Plc
- Employment by the Corporation of Trinity House of Deptford Stroud
- Registered medical practitioners
- Registered dentists
- Registered veterinary surgeons
- Air crew or aircraft maintenance staff
- Advocate of the Royal Court of Guernsey
- Sales representatives of a firm of wholesale suppliers
- Representatives of the Press or of a Broadcasting or Television company
- Principal or technical employee of a firm of Accountants; Architects; Chartered Engineers or Travel Agents

A) We aim for the Work Permit process to be completed within 7 working days, reliant upon the application form being correctly and honestly completed, meaning you won't be waiting long for that confirmation email!
Q) I am from or the UK or N Ireland thinking of moving to the Island; do I need a work permit?
A) If you are from the common travel area (UK and N Ireland) wishing to take up employment you must obtain a work permit, unless you are exempt.
Q) I am from or the EU and thinking of moving to the Island; do I need a work permit?
A) As a result of Brexit if you are from the EU wishing to take up employment you must obtain a working visa which allows employment to be undertaken in the Bailiwick
Q) I am from outside the EU and thinking of moving to the Island; do I need a work permit?
A) If you are from outside the EU wishing to take up employment you must obtain a working visa which allows employment to be undertaken in the UK. You are advised to check with your nearest British Embassy or High Commission prior to travelling.
Q) Am I exempt from applying for a work permit?
A) With skill shortages and certain occupations in demand, the States of Alderney has created a list of exemptions for work permits. (see above)
Q) I am hoping for a change of job with my current employer. Do they need to apply for a new work permit?
A) An employee may not take up a different job with the same employer without a new work permit. Ensure you or your employer applies for your new work permit.
Q) I want to apply for a second job on the island. Do I need to apply for a separate work permit?
A) Yes. For every different job you have on the Island you must apply for a separate work permit.
Q) English is not my first language. Will I be refused a work permit?
A) No, not at all. Not speaking English as your first language is not a sufficient reason for refusing to grant a permit.
